How to play Golf

A quick game: empty the seven columns by playing cards one by one onto the waste pile.

History & origin of Golf

Golf is a fast solitaire named after the way it is scored: as in the sport, the fewer “points” (cards left in the tableau) the better. It belongs to the family of games where you discard cards onto a single pile, following an up-or-down order.

The idea is to clear the seven columns by playing cards, one by one, onto the waste — always one rank above or below the top card. It is accessible and brisk, ideal for a game between tasks.

Being simple and addictive, it became a fixture of computer and mobile solitaire collections, often with a score system for chained games.

Facts about Golf

  • The name comes from golf-style scoring: the goal is to finish with as few stuck cards as possible.
  • In classic Golf there is no wrap: Ace and King do not connect. In the easy version they do, opening up many more moves.
  • There are no foundations by suit — everything goes onto a single waste pile.
  • Long runs (playing several cards in a row) are the key to clearing the board.

How to play Golf step by step

  1. Goal: empty the seven columns by playing cards, one by one, onto the waste.
  2. You can play any uncovered card (the end of each column) that is one rank above OR below the top of the waste — any suit.
  3. There is no wrap here: Ace and King do not connect.
  4. Chain as many cards in a row as you can before you need the stock.
  5. No moves? Click the stock to turn a new card to the waste.
  6. Plan the order: clearing whole columns early opens the way to the ones beneath.
